Project Scope

  • Emergency replacement of a failed 1 MW standby generator
  • Decommissioning and removal of existing 1 MW Detroit Diesel generator
  • Procurement, delivery, installation, and commissioning of new 1 MW Cummins generator
  • Rigging, logistics coordination, and site restoration
  • Full compliance verification and commissioning documentation

The Challenge

The project began as an emergency response after a standby generator experienced an arc flash and could no longer be trusted to operate reliably. Because the site is a live colocation data center, the client required immediate action with zero tolerance for downtime.

Time was the primary constraint. The facility needed a like-for-like replacement sourced, mobilized, installed, and commissioned within days — not weeks — while maintaining full operational integrity of the site.

Our Solution

Within two days of inquiry, Travel Safe mobilized a specialized critical power and rigging team to site. We first safely decommissioned and removed the compromised 1 MW Detroit Diesel generator, coordinating disconnects, rigging, and off-site transport.

In parallel, we sourced a replacement 1 MW Cummins generator, managed expedited logistics, and prepared the site for installation. Our crews self-performed all rigging, electrical tie-ins, testing, and commissioning, ensuring seamless integration with existing infrastructure.

A dedicated account manager and onsite project manager maintained continuous coordination with the facility’s leadership team, providing real-time updates and maintaining strict safety and compliance protocols throughout execution.

Results

  • Decommissioned, removed, sourced, installed, and commissioned a replacement generator in 6 days total
  • Delivered $584,000 in savings compared to the next most affordable contractor bid for the emergency generator scope.
  • Completed all work with zero operational disruption
  • Restored reliable standby power ahead of client expectations

Client Feedback

Travel Safe was the only company we could find that could do the entire scope without subbing anything out, and they got it all done so fast. They were great.”

Significance

This project demonstrates Travel Safe’s ability to execute high-speed, high-stakes critical power work in an operational data center environment. By self-performing decommissioning, rigging, installation, and commissioning, we eliminated subcontractor delays and delivered a faster, safer, and more cost-effective outcome than traditional delivery models.
